Discover Parish Spaces

The Parish Council owns and looks after Grove Park, Village Green, War Memorial, Cemetery, Station Road and Gravel Pit Allotments, Bowling Green, Parish Office and Public Toilets.

Three grounds maintenance companies are contracted to maintain all of the Parish Council's parks and open spaces, with other specialist contractors engaged as required.  The Parish Council also funds the maintenance of some additional areas that are not parish assets, eg. Waltham All Saints' Churchyard, the BMX track on Mount Pleasant and the grass banks by the Co-op Car Park.

Allotments

Waltham Parish Council holds records dating back to 1896 for the allotment land that is on the corner of High Street and Ings Lane (known as Gravel Pit Allotments).

This land was gifted to the poor of the village in order for them to be able to grow their own produce. The allotments are managed by the Parish Council and plots are available for residents to rent.

Previously gravel was excavated from this land in order to maintain and repair the roads around the village.

There still stands today (after major re-construction) the old tool shed that was used by the gravel pit workforce. This is located on the corner of these allotments and it now houses the gas governor equipment for the village.  There is now a plaque in place marking this building's historical importance.

In 2010 the waiting list for village residents wanting an allotment was so long that the Parish Council purchased some land to use for additional allotments.

In 2012, four acres of land on Station Road were purchased and once planning permission and change of use was granted, the area was made into 63 allotments. Both village residents and non-residents can rent these allotments.

Waltham Cemetery

Waltham Cemetery is located on Ings Lane and was first used for burials in early 1906. In 1997 it was extended adding Sections G, H and I to the already fully used Sections A to F.

This cemetery and all the burial records are looked after by the Parish Council. The Parish Council and its Burial Board endeavour to ensure that this area is a clean, tidy, safe and a tranquil place to visit.  A group of volunteer councillors and staff tidy the cemetery before important dates such as Mothering Sunday and Easter.

In the summer of 2016, Waltham Cemetery achieved the accolade of the Best Kept Cemetery in Northern Lincolnshire.

**IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE**

A memorial safety inspection took place in Waltham Cemetery on 15-17 May 2023 as previously advised.

All memorial headstones were tested by trained professionals. A small number of memorials failed the safety test and have been deemed to be too unsafe to remain in the upright position. These memorials have therefore been laid flat to prevent accidents within the cemetery.

The Burial Board Clerk will be contacting the owners of the affected graves regarding the inspection findings and repairs to the memorial headstone to make these safe.

For further information about these memorials or about the memorial inspection and making safe programme, then please contact the Burial Board Clerk on 07547 512155 or via email below:

Village Green

The Village Green is on a prominent site in the centre of the village on High St. It is situated on the former site of the old rectory. The building and land was bought in 1958 by the then Lindsey County Council for £2260 and was then purchased by the Parish Council to become a village green in 1966.

The area today has benches, footpaths wandering through it, trees and a large circular flower bed, which at Christmas is home to the large village Christmas Tree. In the summer it has pretty bedding plants, which brightens up the green and helps with our entry into the Best Kept Village Competition.

Some annual events use the lovely open space. At Christmas it is used for “Carols on the Green”, run by the Parish Council.

When many public toilets are to be closed in our area, we are pleased to say that the toilets in Kirkgate Car Park will remain. The Parish Council took over the running and maintenance of the toilet block in 2006 when North East Lincolnshire Council suggested closing them.

The Public Toilets are open Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm and are situated in the car park at Kirkgate.  There is also access to the disabled toilet via R.A.D.A.R key.

A Brief History

Cenotaph

The Cenotaph on the corner of Brigsley Road and Cheapside was unveiled on 11th November 1920, to remember those Waltham Servicemen who lost their lives during the First World War.

The funds to build this memorial were given by public subscription at a total cost of £358.79

Each year the Parish Council organise a service to be held on Remembrance Sunday, with the assistance of The Royal British Legion and the local churches.

A parade takes place starting at the British Legion on Barnoldby Road.  The parade then stops at the Cenotaph, where a short service takes place for the laying of wreaths. The parade them moves on to All Saints’ Church for a further service, and afterwards returns to the British Legion.

This is a well-attended village event which has now been held for almost 100 years and is a poignant reminder of the service personnel who continue to give their lives for others.

Grove Park

Grove Park is an 11 acre piece of land in a lovely setting.  It was once the grounds of Grove House, where today the Grove Residential Home now stands.

The Park has pedestrian entrances at Elm Road and Ings Lane, and is part of a favourite route for dog walkers.

The Park was opened in 1983 after much work by the Parish Council to clear the overgrown site. It was landscaped and a path put in to make the park accessible for all.

The Park is owned and maintained by the Parish Council. It is kept as natural as possible for all visitors to enjoy. Work is undertaken throughout the year, with tree work when necessary and the grass cut regularly. Recently the wooden footbridge that crosses Buck Beck at the Elm Road entrance was improved with non-slip treads.

There are mature trees along the path (some of which have tree preservation orders), with additional fruit trees that have been planted more recently. There are also some wild flowers and bulbs, with the year starting off with a good show of snowdrops.

Bowling Green

Waltham Parish Council took over a piece of land at Neville Turner Way in early 1992 from Cleethorpes Borough Council.  With the help of grants, contractors and volunteers worked together and a bowling green was built.

In 1996 Waltham Park Bowls Club was formed when players transferred from Park Avenue Bowls Club to our newly built green.  The club then took over the day to day maintenance and upkeep of the green and surrounding gardens, with support from the Parish Council.

The Club quickly became a success and thoughts turned to how the facilities could be improved.  The Parish Council were lucky enough in 2011 to obtain an ex-display wooden pavilion, which was installed with joint funding from the Parish Council and Bowls Club.

In order to improve this facility even further the Parish Council and Waltham Park Bowls Club opened a Petanque and Croquet areas within the grounds, which offer new sports to the village.

Residents are able to use this facility free of charge (there is a small fee for hiring woods/shoes).

The public bowling times are Monday to Friday 2.00pm to 4.00pm & 6.30pm to 8.30pm
